Codes and Conventions of School Magazines

Front Cover

Images: All of the images that feature in school magazines, both on the front cover and the contents page, are of events that have happened during that term in the school. Unlike music magazines, they usually use several images on the front page instead of one main, eye catching image. However 'Fusion' breaks this rule by using a main central image which I think works best. On the other hand these magazines all use one main colour which is eye catching : the colour scheme is simple so the reader is not distracted from the text and images. For example 'Chill' only features red, white and black.

Language: The front cover usually features different headlines of what appears later in the magazine which are all presented clearly. The language is simple and concise and rhetorical questions are often used. eg. “Activities Week Special -what should you be doing this year?”. They are used to make the reader feel included and specifically for them. The name of the magazine is bold and eye catching and generally appears in the top left hand corner.

Contents Page

Images: There are far less images on the contents page, most magazines choosing not to feature any at all. The ones which do include images still use pictures of students participating in events. The colour scheme continues throughout the whole magazine to create a sense of unity.

Language: The title of the contents page is bold and eye catching. In some magazines, instead of being named “Contents Page”, the page is called something a bit more fun and informal to appeal to the students eg. “What’s Going On?”. The page titles are usually on the left handside with the page numbers following on the right. However in some magazines the page headings are seperated in to sections. In most of these magazines the page titles are followed with a short blurb. All the language used is short, snappy, simple and fun. The font is also kept simple and mostly the same.
